Our aims in supporting children with SEND at Uplands
- To ensure all pupils have access to a broad and balanced curriculum
- To identify at an early age, pupils who need extra help and attention
- To ensure that there is a focus on outcomes for pupils, not on provision or support
- To enable each pupil to partake in and contribute fully to school life
- To endeavour to meet the individual needs of each child
- To develop a feeling of self-esteem within the individual
- To foster an atmosphere in our school, that will promote a happy, sensitive and secure environment, to ensure the most effective learning for all children
- To providing for children’s individual needs by supporting them in various ways: whole class, small group and individual
- To monitor closely those with SEND by review and assessment, to enable us to recognise, celebrate and record achievements
- To work with parents/carers and other agencies to provide support and opportunities for those children with SEND
- To use a variety of teaching strategies, which include different learning styles, to facilitate meaningful and effective learning for all children
- To ensure access to a range of resources to support staff in their teaching of children with SEND
- To include the voice of the child and parents/carers in monitoring and reviewing targets
Our SENDCo (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Co-ordinator)
Our SENDCo is Mrs Liz Lord. Mrs Lord is responsible for overseeing the provision for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, and is also our lead for Inclusion in the school and nursery. Mrs. Lord can be reached via the main school office on 01252 873069 or office@uplandsberkshire.org.
The SEND and Inclusion Team
Mrs Lord works alongside Sophia Ahmed (Family Support Advisor/ELSA-trained adult), teaching staff, parents/carers and pupils to ensure the best possible outcomes for all children at Uplands. She can be contacted via the school office.

Family Support Advisor
My name is Mrs Sophia Ahmed and I am the Family Support Advisor. I offer support to parents and carers to help achieve positive outcomes for all. This might include providing information or advice, organising training, giving practical help or just offering a listening ear.
Mrs Ahmed is also our Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) trained adult.
An ELSA-trained adult is a warm and caring person who wants to help your child feel happy in school and wants your child to reach their potential, educationally. An ELSA-trained adult’s aim is to remove the barriers to learning and to have happy children in school and at home.
Please do reach out to us (either by talking to your child’s class teacher or emailing the school office) if you think your child could benefit from support, and we will pass this on to our triage team to see if this type of support is appropriate or if another intervention would be more suitable.
My role is:
- To build parents’ and carers’ confidence to deal with difficult parenting issues and behaviours
- To strengthen relationships and communication between home, school and other professionals
- To encourage involvement in school activities
- To help parents and carers support their children with their learning
- To offer one to one and group support to pupils at Uplands Primary School and Nursery
- To help build children’s self-esteem through nurture groups

As parents and carers, there are times when you need a little extra support and guidance; someone to talk to and help point you in the right direction. Someone who’s non-judgemental, someone who will listen and offer practical advice and support.
I will do whatever I can to help you or will be able to help locate someone that can. If you would like advice or support on any issue, you can contact me to arrange a meeting or informal chat.
